Covid 19 Update (4/9/20)
I hope this update finds all of our patients and their families well. We have transitioned from business as usual to comply with Florida's "stay at home" mandate and are now limiting our office visits to those cases which you or we consider to be urgent. By my interpretation, we are allowed some leeway in determining which patients are seen in the office, so we are doing a limited number of skin exams for those with history of numerous or severe skin cancers; most other visits are only for urgent evaluation of suspicious or painful skin lesions, for treatment of proven or possible skin cancers, for serious infections, etc. We are not permitted much leeway with regard to procedures which utilize masks, gloves or other critical supplies, as the Governor's mandate is very clear that only medically necessary and /or urgent conditions may be treated. If you have an appointment scheduled in the near future, we will call several days or a week prior to discuss the medical necessity of the visit and offer to reschedule your appointment if appropriate. For certain situations and conditions we may offer the option of a telephone or video visit, but in dermatology the ability to assess skin lesions and rashes via remote encounter may be somewhat limited. Because parameters and conditions change on a day by day basis, we are not yet trying to predict scheduling abilities more than a week or so in advance. Given the reduced number of patient visits being conducted now, we may in some instances consolidate patient care to the morning hours and close the office in the afternoons.
In order to comply with all recommended precautions, we have hand sanitizer available (as long as supplies last) in all areas, are hand washing multiple times before and during each patient encounter, are sterilizing instruments per protocol as is normally done, have stepped up internal verification of our protocols and are disinfecting surfaces frequently throughout each day and fully at the end of each day. We currently have adequate masks and other personal protective equipment available to us. As a rule, we will try to maintain a 6 ft distance from patients during normal conversation, history taking and check- in. We will wear masks for our protection and yours if we must have close contact, because of course your health and the health of our staff as well is of utmost importance. With this in mind, I would ask that any patient with fever or other symptoms of illness allow us to reschedule your appointment. If you have an urgent need for skin care and you are ill, please call us so that we can best decide how to care for you. If you don't require the assistance of family members to come to your appointment with you, please ask them to stay at home so that we can limit those in the office to essential personnel and patients. If you have a mask of any sort that you can wear to the office, please do so.
If my staff present any symptoms of fever or illness, or have direct contact with a Covid 19 patient, I will ask them to stay home and to self quarantine, and that may have an impact on our ability to continue our normal schedule. As testing for the virus becomes more available, hopefully that will help us in carrying on our operations. Your understanding during this difficult time is appreciated.
